Non-surgical PRP Knee and Hip Treatment

Platelet Rich Plasma-PRP is Beneficial for many Knee Conditions!

PRP knee hip

The news is getting out. PRP or platelet rich plasma is being utilized to heal knee injuries and sometimes accelerate healing from surgery. More importantly, it is being utilized to prevent the progression of osteoarthritis and address cartilage damage. Local patients from Sarasota, Bradenton, North Port, Venice, Port Charlotte, Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Fort Myers have easy access to Dr. Bennett’s several years of experience customizing PRP treatments to his patients’ specific injuries. Other patients travel from across the state, out of state, as well as from Europe and South America for Dr. Bennett’s years of experience with adult stem cells and PRP.

Prevent Knee and Hip Replacement Surgery with PRP

Bennett Orthopedics has been using PRP both as an in-office injection procedure (done by a board-certified orthopedic surgeon only!) and in other situations with a specific knee surgical procedure, accelerating the healing process. With 24 years of orthopedic surgical experience and 8 years of PRP applications, Dr. Bennett has seen very provocative results- both in accelerating healing for specific surgical conditions and in some cases preventing the need for knee and hip replacement surgery for his patients. The number of patients electing to proceed with a “non-covered” procedure, in order to prevent surgery, has increased over the years he has been performing the treatment.

The high satisfaction rate and the high number of patients who respond favorably to PRP treatment have convinced Dr. Bennett that PRP is here to stay. As he continues to treat knee conditions, he has adjusted the concentrations and types of PRP utilized for specific conditions and also has varied the type of PRP within the treatment of the same patient’s injury at various time intervals. This “customization” of PRP is unique to Dr. Bennett, and can only result from the combination of his years of experience as an early adopter of PRP and stem cells and his qualifications as a board-certified orthopedic surgeon.

One thing is for sure: Not all PRP is the same! Dr. Bennett adds that not all injuries are the same. Dr. Bennett uses his in-office Sonosite MSK ultrasound machine to direct the PRP directly into ligament and tendon tears as well as the joint. (As an orthopedic surgeon licensed and qualified to open the joints of living human beings, he has the intimate knowledge of anatomy of a board-certified actual surgeon. This is an important disctinction, because “PRP” is sometimes offered by doctors or even practitioners who are not M.D.s under the label of “orthopedics”…even though there is no orthopedic surgeon present.)

Common Knee and Hip PRP Treatments

Dr. Bennett has treated knee and hip osteoarthritis, knee and hip cartilage damage or chondromalacia, knee meniscal tears, knee ligament tears including the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL). In fact, Hines Ward, of the Pittsburgh Steelers had PRP treatment of the medial collateral ligament in 2010, just 2 weeks prior to the Superbowl championship game.

In the operating room, Dr. Bennett utilizes PRP when he performs an ACL ligament reconstruction. He notes that there has been more than one study noting that the MRI appearance of the ACL ligament and the harvest site of the patellar ligament both appear much more normal 60 percent faster than those from surgeries without PRP.

He also notes that he has seen markedly decreased pain following total knee surgery when he has added PRP to the knee replacement. He performs a minimally invasive total knee replacement and with this approach plus PRP most patients are off their cane withinin 2 weeks…However many can walk without a cane in TWO DAYS.

He has treated minor to severe knee cartilage damage and minor to severe osteoarthritis. Overall, in Dr. Bennett’s experience about 93 percent of his patients respond and many reach in excess of 85% percent improvement with these injections.

How Successful is PRP?

Bennett Orthopedics, in fact has seen many patients who have been treated with PRP elsewhere and had no response; a majority treated here by Dr. Bennett have had a response and significant, with many avoiding surgery.

Depending on the condition, DR. Bennett notes with the knee, one procedure is usually required for each of the affected knee compartments. For the hip he notes it can vary between 1 and 2 injections. There is about a 7 percent failure rate with conversion to a minimally invasive total knee, although he notes he has not converted a single hip to date. Of the 93 percent responders, he has seen about a 5-7 percent repeat patients who have returned between 12-18 months and had their knees redone. He has only one hip patient that has done the same.

In fact, Dr. Bennett’s clinical experience suggest, that a majority of his knee patients have had continued relief at 3-4 years without the need for a repeat injection. Studies out of Italy, Giuseppe Filardo and Elizaveta Kon have shown that treatment with PRP injections can reduce pain and improve knee function and quality of life with short-term efficacy. The use a non- stem cell preparation and a PRP preparation without White blood cells. Their duration sis shorter than DR. Bennett.

Dr. Bennett has also noted that these injections work better than lubricating injections……have you had any? Supartz, Hyalgan, Euflexxa, Synvisc, Orthovisc , all called viscosupplementation. In fact there are studies now that confirm his experience and observation, Randomized Clinical Trial Evaluating Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF-Endoret) Versus Hyaluronic Acid in the Short-Term Treatment of Symptomatic Knee Osteoarthritis. Mikel Sanchez, PhD, Eduardo Anitua, M.D., D.D.S., Ph.D., there conclusions, “Plasma rich in growth factors showed superior short-term results when compared with HA in a randomized controlled trial, with a comparable safety profile, in alleviating symptoms of mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee. Level of Evidence: Level I, randomized controlled multicenter trial.”
