Post Surgical Shoulder Instructions
Day 1 Post-Op: Surgical dressings are removed and bandages applied over sutures
Day 2 Post-Op: Bandages are removed and you may shower. Do not rub, but dab around sutures, making sure that there is no moisture left in the crevices. You can use a hair dryer on cool to help dry. Put fresh bandages back on. It is okay to touch the incisions.
First Week Following Surgery: Codman pendulum swing. Let arm hang loose, no active use of shoulder muscles, have your body make the movements. Swing arm front and back and side to side.
Day 7 Post-Op: Sutures come out. Wait one day to shower. Steri-strips are applied; let them come off on their own. Physical therapy will start after that.
Exercises at home include stretches and isometrics will be reviewed during physical therapy.
First 6 weeks following surgery: Sleep in sling on an incline. During the day/around the house can be out of the sling starting immediately, unless told otherwise by Dr. Bennett.
Do not lift anything heavy or elevate arm over head for the first 6 weeks. You can bend your elbow to bring things to your mouth. To get dressed, bend forward to get repaired arm through shirt.
